This university educates one third of all graduate engineers in Sweden. Traditionally, KTH prided itself on their ability to provide an environment that encouraged communication and collaboration among students. The reality, however, was that it had an MD110 system with 4,200 extensions, 500 of which were mobile extensions. The hardware was out of date and alongside MD110, it was running a Cisco Call Manager with 350 extensions and a self-developed SIP exchange. Over time, KTH had collected several systems from different vendors, and this resulted in a high cost of ownership. The time was ripe for an overhaul of the communication environment. The overall goal was a modern communication environment that supported mobile and unified communication. Criteria included a system that was easy to administrate and integrate with other systems and self-service for users and human resources. KTH also required a system that was easy to control, without being dependent on suppliers. It needed state-of-the-art functions, such as click-to-call, personal number, buddy lists, presence, chat and collaboration. In addition, cost was a key concern, and with the introduction of one common communications tool, KTH aimed to reduce the cost of ownership and lower costs by saving space with IT-racks and reusing the IP network.
